Februari 1915 Hendrik Geeraert by Jazochromatic Februari 1915 Hendrik Geeraert by Jazochromatic
Recent portrait, painted from an old photo.  Oils on canvas, 60x90cm (24x36"), 2014.

(European) history lesson 101 for the interested :) : the photo is roundabout 100 years old (probably 1918, end of World War I).  This is the Belgian fisherman/sailor Hendrik Geeraert, out of the ordinary photographed in a military costume.  He wasn't in the military, but was honoured with a uniform and medals, because he was the guy in a small group of people who were responsible for inundating the river the 'Yser' in 1914.  Flooding that river in Flanders meant halting the progress of the German army through Belgium on their way to Paris, France.

Flooding the river also meant four years of warfare in the trenches, between Nieuwpoort (Newport) and Ypres.

This man had to do, well, what this man had to do.  Being a fisherman, he was actually the wrong man in the right place to stop the German army.  If you are interested to hear more of this man's story: feel free to ask questions in the comments.  My brother wrote a book about this guy, so I am happy to share more of his story.  Enjoy, cheers!

Painting Do not use without permission, thanks!

As a German I would like to say: Love it. The colors really speaks of the warfare during that time.

Thank you!  The subject of war isn't a positive one, but I still want to see these portraits as people, whose lives were overrun by a war.  Glad you like it, cheers!
